Cruz Says He Wouldn’t Vote To Confirm Sri Srinivasan To Supreme Court
One of Scalia’s nine children, the Rev. Paul Scalia, is set to lead the Mass.
“In the past week, many have recounted for what dad did for them, but here today, we recount what God did for dad”, Scalia said.
“Many of the Torah’s commandments and rabbis’ teachings specifically deal with the importance of a fair judicial system”, said the letter sent Friday.
The younger Scalia also shared a humorous and heartfelt tale about when his father went to confession one Saturday while his son was there.
“He quickly departed it. As he put it later, ‘Like heck if I’m confessing to you, ‘” the younger Scalia said.
The White House arranged for photographers to snap pictures of Obama carrying a thick binder filled with papers during his walk from the Oval Office to his residence on Friday night as he ponders who to pick to replace conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, who died on February 13. “There are plenty of judges (who) are on high courts already who have had unanimous support of the Republicans”.
The burial will be private, and the Supreme Court hasn’t released details.
Biden, who presided over Supreme Court confirmation hearings while in the Senate, took issue with the notion that a Scalia replacement can’t be confirmed during Obama’s final year. Scalia’s flag-draped casket rested on a funeral bier first used after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, in 1865.
President Obama, members of Congress and others are expected to pay their respects ahead of Saturday’s funeral.
The casket is carried into the Great Hall of the Supreme Court. Ninety-eight former Scalia law clerks took turns standing vigil during the day.
Cruz said if Obama were to make a selection now, it wouldn’t “be fair to the nominee”.
A CBS News poll and a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll showed Americans closely split along partisan lines on whether Obama should name Scalia’s successor.
Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the archbishop of Washington, welcomed the congregation to what he joked was a “simple parish family mass”.
Leonard Leo, executive director of the Federalist Society, a conservative legal group, was to read a passage from the Old Testament, while Justice Clarence Thomas planned to read from the New Testament.
The vacancy on the Supreme Court left by Justice Scalia has sent shockwaves through Washington.
The last to arrive was Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a longtime family friend of Scalia, who once said they were an “odd couple” and he counted her as his “best buddy” on the bench.
Paul Scalia – a Catholic priest serving the diocese of Arlington, Virginia – also plans to deliver the homily. His funeral is on Saturday.
