Cruz throws his support to Trump’s campaign at last
But that was as far as he was willing to go. However, the Times reported, it seems that the Cruz and Trump camp are starting to see a “tentative peace”.
Earlier Friday, Trump added Utah Sen. Lee had appeared blindsided when Cruz, a fellow member of the Judiciary Committee, used a 2015 hearing on criminal justice reform to announce that the threat of “violent criminals” had moved him against a reform bill.
“This endorsement will not convince #NeverTrump folks to change our minds about The Donald”, he continued, “but we may well be forced to reconsider our support for Sen”. “I am truly grateful for his endorsement of our ticket and look forward to working with him to advance Donald Trump’s agenda to make America great again”. “And Donald Trump is the only thing standing in her way”.
Cruz ended his presidential campaign in May.
“You’re doing such a fine job saying that”, Cruz responded. “Either you said those things during the heat of the campaign and you didn’t mean them, or you did mean them and somehow you’re looking past that and you think a serial philanderer who is utterly immoral and a pathological liar should be president”. But Cruz was tempered in his defense of his decision to endorse. Mike Lee, in his updated list of potential Supreme Court picks.
“My faith teaches me to forgive, with or without an apology”, Cruz said, telling the crowd at a Texas Tribune policy forum in Austin that his family chose to not hold a grudge against Trump. Even Cruz lovers who weren’t so keen on Trump were flummoxed at the show of party disloyalty, and rivals have sensed vulnerability as he eyes re-election in 2018. The not so surprising right turn by the fiery ultra-conservative comes after his speech at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland last August where he urged delegates to vote with their conscience in November. Cruz is undoubtedly a very intelligent man, but the past year of campaigning has revealed his tendency to attempt devious bits of political triangulation that are just a little too clever to actually work.
Cruz’s decision might lessen his luster for some of his most faithful admirers, who respected his refusal to bend to the demand that he endorse a candidate for president whom Cruz had made clear he found to be philosophically undependable and personally repugnant.
And it didn’t escape notice that Trump had mocked the idea of Cruz endorsing him.
They include first and foremost the necessity to nominate conservative Supreme Court justices who would defend the Constitution.
Over the next few days, the Hillary Clinton campaign will get a lot of mileage out of that.
“If they feel like they have the African-American community locked up, they should be very, very careful about making that assumption”, Sara Lomax Reese, president of Philadelphia’s independent black radio station WURD, said of Clinton and her team.
“If somebody said that about my dad, they would never have me as a supporter for anything”, he said.
