CSU coach Bobo interviewed for Mizzou job
Others interviewing for the Missouri job, according to Yahoo, are Air Force coach Troy Calhoun; Utah State coach Matt Wells; and Colorado State coach Mike Bobo. His father, Spike, was a longtime coach at Texas Tech, where Sonny played, and he mentored in the Air Raid family with Hal Mumme and Mike Leach.
Dykes is 13-23 in three years at Cal. The Bears, who finished the regular season last Saturday at 7-5 (4-5 Pac-12), are waiting to learn where they’ll head for their first bowl appearance since 2011.
However, there are conflicting reports over if Wells interviewed for the opening, as Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel is reporting that Wells did not interview.
The Tigers went 5-7 this past season under Pinkel.
The interesting tidbit of information here is that a contract extension is on the table for Dykes at Cal. But he has yet to accept it.
Dykes has two years remaining on his original five-year deal. “I came here, and it’s where I want to be”. He won 10 games last season despite using four quarterbacks because of injuries. The Texan has been an offensive assistant at the FBS level at Kentucky (1999), Texas Tech (2000-06) and Arizona (2007-09).
Dykes has led an academic turnaround with the football program after Tedford’s final teams scored among the nation’s worst by the NCAA’s graduation figures and Academic Progress Rate. The past three seasons, Cal’s defense has ranked No. 124, 124 and 110 in yards allowed per game and No. 124, 123 and 87 in points allowed per game.
A Cal football player at the Bears’ basketball game against Seattle said he and his teammates have heard nothing from their coaches, who are out of town recruiting.
Dykes has a $2 million buyout option if he leaves the school before December 31. He is the lowest-paid head coach in the Pac-12 Conference. It’s unclear whether Dykes still will be leading the program.
A fifth candidate already is on staff at Missouri, defensive coordinator and Mizzou alum Barry Odom.
