Cuba Confirms Zero Cases of the Zika Virus
Taylor told a news conference his agency is monitoring the situation as the virus spreads, particularly in South America. The New York Times reported that “as many as four million people could be infected by the end of the year”.
Experts with the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) believe even should there be imported Zika cases, the virus will be less likely to spread as cold weather is unfavourable for the mosquito-borne virus. “In addition, we are urging everyone, especially pregnant women, to check health travel advisories before leaving the United States and to take preventive measures when traveling in affected areas of the world”.
The ministry has warned people travelling from Zika virus-struck countries that they should keep an eye on their health in the first 14 days after arrival to Vietnam. Long-term health consequences of Zika infection remain unclear. Following major eradication efforts, it was declared free of the mosquito in 1958. “Again, let’s not spring into action only when an infection’s already here”, Lee Suy said.
According to the study, about half of those women had to be hospitalized afterwards, which has made the issue a public health concern in the country.
The patient, who lives in Boston, contracted the virus while traveling outside the US, the commission said. Imported cases have been reported in several European countries. But for pregnant women, it can be a devastating problem. A spokeswoman said Australian laboratories could diagnose the virus if required.
Cambodia’s only Zika case recovered in 2010 after treatment. The ministry said it received the positive Zika virus test result from CARPHA late yesterday. It’s also urging people to destroy mosquito-breeding places.
Zika virus, first detected in Uganda’s Zika forest in 1947, is transmitted to humans through the “Aedes mosquito” which is also the main carrier of dengue fever.
“Community awareness plays an instrumental role in this regard”.
Officials from Centers for Disease Control recommend that pregnant women avoid traveling to countries with the outbreaks.
The illness itself is generally mild, Taylor said.
There are 42 species of mosquito that call South Dakota home but the Aedes Aegypti is not one of them.
“A causal relationship between Zika virus infection and birth malformations and neurological syndromes has not yet been established, but is strongly suspected”.
