Though, it does add more riches to what has to be considered one of the best pitching staffs in the game. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
The deal isn’t yet official, and it could involve more players as well. Montgomery is nothing special, but he’s put up solid stats this year in relief.
The Cubs made a move to shore up their bullpen.
Montgomery debuted in 2015 and has a career 3.68 ERA. The left-handed side has been a big part of the problem, with Travis Wood, Clayton Richard, and Gerardo Concepcion combining for a 4.12 ERA and six home runs allowed in 54.2 innings. Vogelbach is playing at Class AAA Iowa.
Vogelbach, 23, was originally selected by the Cubs in the second round of the 2011 Draft.
According to reports, the Mariners are receiving minor-league DH/1B Dan Vogelbach in return for Mike Montgomery.
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound southpaw broke into the big leagues by making 16 starts with the Mariners past year, going 4-6 with a 4.60 ERA (46 ER/90.0 IP) and two complete game shutouts. He has batted.290 (523-for-1,804) with 76 homers and 323 RBI in 500 minor league games covering the last six seasons in the Cubs system. He’s 26 years old and has pitched in Tacoma for the past three seasons. Seattle has Nelson Cruz at the designated hitter, but he also has played a reasonable amount of games in the right field this season. The Mariners are said to also be shopping Adam Lind, and considering Vogelbach is essentially big league ready, he could join the Mariners in short order.
The MLB trade deadline is August 1.
