Cubs’ Kris Bryant And Angels’ Mike Trout Named Baseball’s Most Valuable Players
Trout finished second in the MVP voting in his 2012 rookie season, was runner-up again in 2013, won MLB’s top honor in 2014 and was runner-up once more previous year. Voting by the Baseball Writers Association of America was completed by the start of the playoffs.
Those might not be established traditions like Thanksgiving dinner, but they’re certainly a couple of drumsticks worth chewing on.
While David Ortiz’s retirement is the big story out of the Boston clubhouse, let’s not go to sleep on the season and the numbers that Betts put up.
Trout, who was a unanimous victor in 2014, became the 31st player to win multiple MVP awards.
For just the second time since 1994, Trout led the league in walks and runs, with the other to do so since that bench mark being himself in 2013.
Bryant collected 29 of the 30 first-place votes and 415 points. Ortiz finished in sixth-place, with Jose Altuve, Josh Donaldson and Manny Machado placing just behind Trout and Betts.
Two of Arenado’s teammates, second baseman D.J. LeMahieu and center fielder Charlie Blackmon, also received votes.
He finished less than a point behind Colorado Rockies second baseman D.J. LeMahieu for the batting title.
Albert Pujols and Barry Bonds are the only other players in baseball history to finish in the top three in MVP voting in five straight years.
Seager’s 193 hits were the most by a rookie since Pujols and Ichiro Suzuki in 2001.
Trout’s Los Angeles Angels finished fourth, 21 games out of first in the A.L. West. He finished with a sky-high.441 on-base percentage and a 10.6 WAR, putting him a full win ahead of runner-up Mookie Betts. With this accomplishment, he is the first MVP from a losing team since Alex Rodriguez for Texas in 2003. Trout said. “With this MVP this year, I guess it doesn’t matter”.
“There are a lot of great players across the country, across the world, that you’re playing against each and every day”. It’s just a surreal moment, one of the moments you can’t really explain. “It was a good moment”. He was sixth in stolen bases.
Murphy made a solid case for MVP honors himself after joining the Nationals as a free agent following his postseason breakout with the New York Mets in October 2015. The 5-6 second baseman hit a career-high 24 homers with 96 RBI. He was selected to the All-Star team in his first two major-league seasons. He also wound up winning his third consecutive Silver Slugger Award at second base. He joins Dustin Pedroia (2007-08), Ryan Howard (2005-06) and Cal Ripken Jr. He led the NL with 47 doubles, a.595 slugging percentage and a.985 OPS. He was ranked among the league’s top four defenders at shortstop while hitting 26 homers and registering an.877 OPS.
