Cubs owners linked to effort to bring down Trump
Trump’s tweet follows revelations that Marlene Ricketts, the matriarch of the Ricketts family that owns the Chicago Cubs baseball team, contributed $3 million to the anti-Trump super-PAC “Our Principles PAC”, which is being run by former Mitt Romney adviser Katie Packer.
Donald Trump waved a warning flag at “the Ricketts family” on Twitter Monday following reports that Marlene Ricketts, the wife of billionaire Joe Ricketts, has been funding negative TV ads directed at Trump.
Virtually all the money the committee raised in January came from Ricketts, whose family owns the Chicago Cubs. “They better be careful, they have a lot to hide!”
Despite the significant spending, however, the real estate mogul has had strong performances, winning by a large lead in SC and New Hampshire and finishing Iowa at the second place.
Keen observers of the political landscape may have discerned this bit of information: The Republican establishment sort of hates its presidential front-runner Donald Trump. Marlene Ricketts, however, also spread smaller amounts to other contenders, giving $10,000 each a year ago to super PACs that backed Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Florida Sen.
“If you’ve got an issue with what we are saying, talk to Donald Trump”, she said. Their son, Pete, has been the Governor of Nebraska since 2015.
The family had previously given $5 million to a super-PAC supporting the failed presidential bid of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. He could do some wheeling and dealing in the real-estate market around Wrigley Field, where the Ricketts have big plans for surrounding the ballpark with businesses and homes.
