Cubs rally for 8-7 win against Pirates in 13 innings
Chicago Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo (44) celebrates his two-run home run off Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Chad Kuhl with Javier Baez after the pair scored during the first inning of a baseball game Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016.
Coles absence means all five starters from the beginning of the season are no longer in Pittsburghs rotation. Dexter Fowler, Mr. “You Go We Go”, proved that hunch correct with a leadoff single that set the tone for the bottom of the inning (+0.133).
Washington’s Tanner Roark threw seven scoreless innings, steering the Nationals to a 4-0 win against Philadelphia.
LHP Steven Brault was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis to start Monday’s road game against the Chicago Cubs. “We just came up short”.
Pirates reliever Tony Watson had gotten Soler to chase earlier in the at-bat to get to a two-strike count, but his 1-2 pitch got too much plate and was left over the outer half.
“He has to be Cy Young contention”, Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “He wants to get back out there”, Maddon said.
TIGERS 8, WHITE SOX 4: Ian Kinsler homered and drove in four runs as the Detroit Tigers rallied to beat the Chicago White Sox 8-4 on Tuesday night. Josh Harrison got picked off in the fourth after drawing a walk, and Gregory Polanco got caught stealing after his single in the fifth, the first Pirates hit of the night.
Soler’s one-out double to the left field wall brought home Bryant, and Jason Heyward’s fielder’s choice grounder to first delivered Rizzo.
NATIONALS 3, PHILLIES 2: Max Scherzer didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning and he was dominant through eight as the Washington Nationals continued their mastery of the Philadelphia Phillies with a 3-2 victory Tuesday night.
“Where I was at last year and my goals coming into this year, what I was trying to do, I definitely didn’t see myself as being a part of that”, Hendricks said. The 33-year-old has lost two straight turns following a six-start winning streak and allowed 13 runs – nine earned – in 5 2/3 frames over those two outings. “Obviously the two homers were kind of the dagger for me”. Marte has 80 hits against the Cubs, the most against any opponent among active players.
Pirates: RHP Tyler Glasnow (shoulder) was activated from the 15-day DL and optioned to Indianapolis, where he will make at least one start before the Triple-A season ends next week.
On a team that boasts Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester and John Lackey, it is Kyle Hendricks who is emerging as the ace of the Chicago Cubs’ pitching staff.
Hendricks has done it at home (9-1 with a 1.21 ERA through 14 games at Wrigley Field) and helped preserve the bullpen (3-0 with a 0.79 ERA in three starts following an extra-inning game the day before).
PITTSBURGH: Kuhl gave up just two runs over 6 1/3 innings on Thursday versus the Brewers, giving up five hits while striking out five and walking two in the no-decision.
