Cuomo eulogizes aide slain in Brooklyn
Cuomo delivered the eulogy at the service for Carey Gabay in Brooklyn. “The spread of gun violence has to stop and it has to stop now”, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said of aide Carey Gabay’s death.
43-year-old Gabay was shot in the head during the J’ouvert festivities that took place before the West Indian Parade. He became an assistant counsel for Cuomo in 2011 after working in finance.
“His demise was some of the tragic, pointless examples of the rampant violence that’s spreading like a most cancers by means of our society, particularly in our poorer communities and particularly in our communities of colour”, Cuomo stated.
Gabay was “the most innocent of innocent victims”, the governor said.
Gabay is believed to have been an unintended goal, police stated.
The 43-year-old, who served as first deputy general counsel at the Empire State Development Corp., died September 15 after being placed in a medically induced coma.
The NYPD has a sketch of the suspect involved in the shooting of Gabay, a 19 to 20-year-old black male who was wearing a white tee shirt, black trousers and a Jamaican flag around his neck.
Speaking with reports at the funeral, Governor Cuomo gave new details about the night of the shooting.
“The gun violence in this city, in this state, has gotten out of control”, Cuomo said. The fact that our governments do nothing about is unforgivable.
