Cuomo names Common Core task force, wants fewer tests
The Task Force will complete its review and deliver its final recommendations by the end of this year. Samuelson said the task force “has the opportunity to ensure that this balance is met in New York State”.
Common Core has drawn criticism from educators and politicians alike. At that website, the overview says that “parents and teachers should be able to have faith” in the state’s learning standards, which must be “strong, sensible and fair”.
Some will dismiss the new Common Core-aligned curriculum for a failure, but it doesn’t really matter if they do.
To be sure, there are parents and teachers of New York students on the committee, as well as high-level officials, such as State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia, trusted to represent a wide range of views, including those of the young people attending the state’s public schools, where the common core standards are being implemented and tested. “By performing an in-depth review of everything from curriculum to testing, we can lay out exactly what needs to be done to fix the Common Core”.

This wouldn’t necessarily excuse the student from the Common Core tests, but the tests are not typically connected to consequences at the individual student level. “As long as tests are linked to closing schools and teachers losing jobs, you’re going to see the same backlash from parents…”
“It is time to overhaul the Common Core program and also the way we test our students”, the governor said in a video released Monday. With so much proof right in front of me that things were awry in that school, it would have felt like a real stretch for me to not worry.
He recently called the tests ‘deeply flawed’. “And I’m all for that”, said Grant.
Common Core state standards lowers the bar; it does not raise it. He is known for “his pioneering work helping children and families in Harlem, and as a thought leader and passionate advocate for education reform”, according to Cuomo’s office.
How students did on the exams, White said, will be sobering.
