Curfew Lifted In Charlotte After Days Of Peaceful Protests
Sunday brought a sixth day of protests over last Tuesday’s shooting. Friday, a police source confirmed to WBTV that the gun reportedly found near the body of Keith Lamont Scott has Scott’s fingerprints, DNA and blood on it. Wallace separates the incident into two parts: the decision to disarm Scott, followed by the decision to shoot.
Before the release of the video, hundreds massed outside at the Charlotte police department building on Saturday afternoon chanting the name “Keith Scott”. But many fans missed it, entering the stadium from a different direction.
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (1) wears a shirt with an MLK quote about injustice before the NFL football game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Carolina Panthers on in Charlotte, North Carolina, Sept. 25, 2016. Lawyers for a coalition of media groups have written a letter asking for more video footage and other information related to a fatal police shooting.
The protesters also lined up in front of the stadium and took a knee as the national anthem played inside.
While the dash cam video doesn’t explicitly show whether Scott had a gun or a book in his hand, it does show officers repeatedly yelling at him to drop a gun. The source insisted on speaking anonymously because the State Bureau of Investigation continues to look into the case.
“He’s complying, he’s complying”, Williams says, watching the dash camera video. Four shots are heard, and he falls to the ground. Police blocked off downtown streets late into the night Saturday as they had throughout the day, allowing demonstrators to take over roadways without confrontations with vehicles.
Charlotte’s curfew has been lifted after days of protests over the police shooting of 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott.
It can not be determined from the video whether his foot is on the object, but his foot does not move for the rest of the video while other officers at the scene are in motion.
The body camera footage from an officer on the scene was blurry and didn’t show Scott’s hands.
” ‘If he had a gun in his hand, I couldn’t see it”. “Breaking that window with the baton indicates to me that they are attempting to mitigate the situation through less than lethal means”, he added.
“It is clear from the videos released that in the moments leading up to the shooting, Mr. Scott was non-aggressive, had his hands down by his side, appeared confused, and was passively walking backwards”, Bamberg said.
Scott’s family calls the video inconclusive.
“Officers did not consider Mr. Scott’s drug activity to be a priority at the time and they resumed the warrant operation”, the release states. “He’s passively stepping back”. The protester, 26-year-old Donnell Jones of Missouri, was not hurt and was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, police said.
Heavy criticism has been leveled against U.S. Rep. Robert Pittenger (D-N.C.), who told BBC Newsnight that the protesters “hate white people because white people are successful and they’re not”, the New York Times reports.
Charlotte has been on edge since Scott’s death.
Overnight, Channel 9 learned that Charlotte-Mecklenburg police made 11 arrests Sunday night.
