Curry County Phone Scam
The potential victim is informed that if he or she does not follow these commands he or she would be arrested by the Sheriff’s Office.
The Wright County Sheriff’s Office said it’s received about 20 calls a day stating supposed IRS employee are threatening to arrest people over unpaid taxes.
All official business from their agency would occur at the main Sheriff’s Office, the Harbor Sub-station.
Federal authorities also say the IRS will never contact you by telephone. “Scammers try to use good people and financial services companies to steal money”.
IRS imposters are calling using fake names, titles and even badge numbers in New Mexico. Since I don’t owe IRS any money and hadn’t heard from IRS about taxes due, I suspected the call was a scam.
If you feel that you are the subject of a scam call, do not hesitate to hang up and call the Jaffrey police at 532-7865.
The sheriff said he would like to remind citizens that phone scams such as this one are reported more frequently during tax season.
“IRS” calls and asks for a credit card number over the phone to pay an outstanding debt. More than 4,550 victims have collectively over $23 million as a result of phone scams. The IRS will not demand that you pay taxes and not allow you to question or appeal the amount you owe.
