Cutler, Bears hold off Packers 17-13 at Lambeau
Cutler was a little better, somewhat of a surprise given how poorly he has played at Lambeau in his career with the Bears.
The Bears responded with their loudest statement in years in the NFL’s oldest rivalry, a 17-13 victory that suddenly made them the most optimistic five-win team in the league.
Before Chicago’s game at Green Bay, the Vikings running back tweeted, “Happy Thanksgiving world and Let’s go Chicago Bears!”. “I don’t even remember the last time that we left this stadium, honestly”, Cutler said. James Jones couldn’t hang on to a potential touchdown catch on third down. He is 0-4 at Lambeau Field with a quarterback rating of 41.1, three touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
“I think the offense has evolved a lot since that first week”, quarterback Jay Cutler said. “That’s the last thing we talked about”. He did have to do all his handing off with his right hand and said he was still waiting for the feeling to return to a couple of his fingers. Last year, he threw two interceptions in the Bears’ 55-14 loss at Green Bay. But the Packers remain wary, especially since Cutler is 10 games into his first season with coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase.
The highlight of the night for Green Bay turned out to be the return of Favre, whose name and No. 4 was unveiled at halftime next to the team’s other retired numbers.
“They’re all so hard to get”, Fox said.
Cutler was 19-for-31 for 200 yards and one touchdown for Chicago (5-6), who won for the third time in four games.
The Green Bay Packers chose their home game with the Chicago Bears as the night they wanted to honor Brett Favre and retire his jersey- of all the games they could have chosen, why this one?
“Difficult loss this evening”.
“Make no bones about it”, McCarthy said, “if you don’t hold onto the football, if you turn the football over, your opportunities are going to decrease or go away”.
But McCarthy’s offense couldn’t capitalize, moving quickly up the field on their final two drives only to come up short.
Robbie Gould’s 21-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for Chicago was the only scoring for either team in the second half of a game played dreary conditions.
Lacy’s ball security issues continued; he lost a fumble deep in Bears territory, a play that got him benched briefly. Cutler cashed in on Chicago’s next drive by finding Zach Miller for a 3-yard touchdown pass that tied it at 7 with 6:03 left in the half.
“Didn’t have a very good day today, the consistency we’re getting in certain areas needs to pick up.”
Though Lacy has battled several injuries, benchings, and inconsistencies, Lacy may be a key in getting the Packers back on track. “Catch the ball. That’s our job, we’re receivers – catch it”.
“When they do that, we’ve got to run the ball”.
All eyes were on the running back split in Matt Forte’s return from a knee injury, and he played 37 of the 67 snaps (55 percent) compared to Jeremy Langford’s 30 snaps (45 percent).
But the voice of the Packers says the players are likely not hitting the panic button – but rather focusing on correcting the myriad of mistakes the team is struggling with.
