Cy Young Award predictions: Historic seasons from Greinke, Arrieta, Kershaw
Kershaw, who had won the award in three of the previous four seasons, struck out more batters than any pitcher since 2002. The other first-place votes went to left-hander David Price (143).
Great from start to finish, Greinke, it seems, was ultimately outdone by Arrieta’s historic finish.
Dallas Keuchel of the Astros had a breakout year in 2015 and helped lead his team to the A.L. Wild Card, and wins the A.L. Cy Young.
“I’m a little relieved, honestly, to finally know how it played out”, Arrieta said, reports MLB.com. He led the entire major league in wins and had the lowest ERA by a Cubs pitcher in 96 years.
However, Arrieta ended the season 12-1 with an ERA of 0.75 in his final 15 starts.
Chicago Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta, of Plano East, capped a superb season on Wednesday by winning the National League Cy Young award.
A key player in the Cubs’ unbelievable 2015 season, he went 22-6 in 33 starts with a 1.77 earned run average (ERA).
Keuchel becomes the second Razorback to ever win a Cy Young Award, joining fellow southpaw Cliff Lee, who won the AL Cy Young Award in 2008.
McHugh received five total points in voting – one 4th place vote and three 5th place votes. Los Angeles Times sports writers are not allowed to vote for awards, but if I’d had a ballot it would have gone Greinke, Arrieta and Kershaw. “Life is based on different chapters and I think I’m ready to experience the next one in my life”. Gray got 24 third-place votes with Price getting one, leaving Chris Sale of the White Sox the remaining three third-place votes.
“I have to say thanks to all the guys I’ve continued to compete against year in and year out to try to take my game to the next level”, Arrieta said. It is simply the result of talent, hard work, sublime confidence and a good support staff coming together.
Arrieta’s dominance and wins in the second half of the season earned him the Cy Young over teammates Kershaw and Greinke as the Cubs ace was a cut above the rest.
Greinke posted a 1.66 ERA that was the lowest in the majors since 1995.
Kluber won the Cy Young award in 2014, and had a similar performance past year in terms of strikeouts and walks per nine innings pitched. Although the season did not end in the way the Cubs had hoped, as the curse without a World Series Championship now extends to 108 years after the NLCS loss to the New York Mets, what Jake Arrieta did in 2015 is nothing short of incredible.
