Cyber Monday traffic expected to dip
At one point, the post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy gave way to Cyber Monday – effectively a migration of the Black Friday concept online – a day the NRF expected 121 million shoppers for this year.
Cyber Monday tradition dates back a decade when retailers launched promotions for the Monday after the US Thanksgiving holiday – when many people took advantage of high-speed Internet at their offices.
“Unlike 10 years ago, we live in a world in which you can shop anywhere at any time”, National Retail Foundation President and CEO Matthew Shay said in written statement. Good luck. The Department of Revenue says they only collected $8.2 million dollars of online sales tax this past year, a fraction of what could be paid.
“Now, as more and more shopping is completed online, the holiday hiring is shifting away from stores and into the warehouses”, he said.
Thanksgiving was the fastest-growing online shopping day, with sales rising 25 percent to a record $1.7 billion, according to Adobe.
Interestingly, Adobe reports that the problem of out-of-stock items hit record levels during Cyber Monday 2015. That puts sales on track for $3 billion, Adobe said.
Online shopping is taking its toll on brick-and-mortar shopping.
While every other retailer was working hard for those Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, e-commerce giant Amazon quietly stole the thunder with their “lightning deals” which can usually offer better deals than anything else.
According to IBM, online sales jumped 26% on Saturday and Sunday, compared to 17% over the same weekend in 2014.

Retailers have been touting online deals since the beginning of November.
That’s a 16 percent increase from last year, continuing to make it the biggest shopping day of the year, year after year. Consumers are using their gadgets and mobile devices to shop online this holiday season. High traffic even caused Target’s website to briefly crash on Monday.
The deals are meant to last longer than a day and are likely to reappear later in the month, giving you more time to pick out the flawless gift and avoid the unwanted crowds.
