D-backs send Anderson, Hill to Brewers for SS Segura, Wagner
Shortstop Jean Segura was acquired by the D-Backs along with minor-league pitcher Tyler Wagner from the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday in exchange for second baseman Aaron Hill, righthander Chase Anderson, and shortstop prospect Isan Diaz, per Keith Law of ESPN.
“In Chase Anderson and Aaron Hill, we are adding two proven major league contributors who will impact our team this year”, Brewers general manager David Stearns said in a statement.
Segura, 25, has appeared in 142-plus games, including 139-plus starts at shortstop, and collected 550-or-more at-bats and 20-or-more stolen bases in each of the last 3 seasons.
Diaz, 19, was selected by the Diamondbacks in the second round of the 2014 draft out of Springfield Central High School in MA.
Hill, 33, is a veteran of 11 seasons in the Major Leagues with Toronto (2005-11) and Arizona (2011-15). He also stole seven bases and can play second and third base.
Anderson, 28, was 6-6 with a 4.30 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 152 2/3 innings last season. Levering joined the broadcast team previous year.
Segura, 25, who recently signed for $2.6 million to avoid arbitration, started at short for the Brewers for three-plus seasons.
The 25-year-old shortstop was an All-Star in 2013, but has posted underwhelming numbers since, batting an aggregate.252/.285/.331 over 1,141 plate appearances since the beginning of the 2014 season. He was a college closer who relies on deception and a quality sinker, and profiles as a possible back-end starter in the majors. Their top prospect, Orlando Arcia, is a shortstop that is close to reaching the majors. “Aaron has a long history of production and positional versatility”, he said.
Wagner, 25, also had a big season at Biloxi, finishing first in the Southern League with a 2.25 ERA. He’s yet to play above rookie ball, but does have a.291/.377/.515 line with 16 home runs in 454 career minor league at bats, including 13 home runs in just 272 at bats in 2015. He made his major-league debut last season, starting three games and going 0-2 with a 7.24 ERA for Milwaukee. Baseball America has him as the #9 prospect in Arizona’s system, and the #3 prospect in the Pioneer League in 2015.
