‘Daddy’s Home’ Linda Cardellini Discusses Blended Families, Holiday Plans And
Not a vast amount is required of Wahlberg, except to provide a ripped, inscrutable punchline to every scene in which Ferrell’s Brad is trying too hard.
Blatant product placement mixes with called-out casual racism and electrocutions in what is essentially a TV pilot stretched to 90-minutes (in fact it’s an idea Modern Family have covered in a single-episode and the 1980s stretched to three-seasons in My Two Dads). “He’s mommy-focused. They love Daddy, but they love Mommy more”.
Unlike Brad, manipulative freeloader Dusty (Wahlberg) is beefed-up, good-looking and ineffably cool. Give him more roles.
Dusty will not be easily defeated and constantly throws tests at Brad to break his nice guy exterior, with the homely Brad retaliating to prove he is dependable and more capable at daddy duty. Cardellini had to work with the comical duo of Mark Walhberg and Will Ferell in this special for project, describing her experience with one word: “A dream”, the artist added, “It was so much fun, Will and I have the majority of the scenes and we improv so much together”, however; unlike her character Sarah, Linda couldn’t pick a favorite, “The two of them are so amusing together and incredible gracious and fun”. The most out-there it gets is in a scene which features a brilliant-but-brief cameo from Ant-Man’s Bobby Cannavale, who plays fertility expert Dr Francisco here.
Sadly, the chemistry doesn’t produce quite enough fizz this time around. Let’s just say things got a bit out of hand by the end.
Directed and co-written by Sean Anders (Horrible Bosses 2, Dumb and Dumber To), Daddy’s Home reunites improvisational comedy god Will Ferrell and Bostonian tough guy Mark Wahlberg in an amusing, if slightly predictable, family comedy.
Ferrell, 48, is proud that this look at the often ridiculous rivalry between a divorced father (Boston native and “Ted” star Mark Wahlberg) and stepfather (Ferrell) for the affections of two young kids is some kind of milestone.
