Dalai Lama criticized for comments on prospective female successor
The Dalai Lama says he is open to the idea of a female successor as long as she’s “very, very attractive”.
The Dalai Lama responded to say “why not”, and that that women “biologically” have the potential to show more affection and compassion, adding that they should take on more important roles in today’s “troubled world”.
Myrie laughed, assuming the Tibetan Buddhist was joking and when he asked to confirm, the Dalai Lama said he wasn’t kidding. “Is that what you are saying?”
The wider context of the Dalai Lama’s interview with the BBC had little to do with his own future and that of the Tibetan cause.
“No. True!” the Dalai Lama exclaimed. The Dalai Lama urged European nations not to reject individuals because of their Muslim faith, saying “Islam, like any other religion, it sends its message of love forgiveness”. When Italian newspaper Illinois Messaggero asked him if he’d ever appoint a female leader of a Vatican department, the pope answered in the “take my wife-please!” tradition: “Well, pastors often wind up under the authority of their housekeeper!”
It’s not rare for religious leaders to make controversial remarks, but for the most part, the Dalai Lama seemed to be an exception to this rule – until now. He said that if a woman was to take his place, why not? “What is improper is the use of organs already defined as inappropriate for sexual contact”.
Some have come to his defence.

He also said gay marriage was up the countries laws but if the law permits then it is fine.
