Dallas PD chief defends decision to kill suspect in deadly ambush
Police killed Johnson with a bomb-carrying robot, ending a standoff. Four Dallas officers, four DART officers, and two Dallas County Community College officers were wounded.
The Dallas sniper’s home had bomb-making materials and a rambling journal which showed plans for a larger effort to target law-enforcement officers for what he saw as abuse of minorities, according to Dallas Police Chief David Brown.
Investigators have determined that 11 officers returned fire at the suspect and two used a Remotec Andros Mark V-A1 robot with an explosive device to kill him inside El Centro College.
Johnson, 25, had no previous criminal history, police say.
The astonished father added: “I don’t know what to say to anybody to make anything better”.
“The last thing I want is for someone to come to my door and tell us my son is not with us anymore”, Guardado said.

The parents of Dallas gunman Micah Xavier Johnson have spoken out for the first time since their son’s attack on police Thursday night.
Brown, who is black, said Monday his family had received death threats following last week’s shooting. As the Observer has previously reported, he’s a recently discharged Army reservist. He was with the transit authority for seven years.
The shootings occurred during a march to protest police violence against African-Americans. Monday morning commuters honked in support.
Police said Johnson had been planning an even bigger attack.
No uniformed police officers are apparent at the protest.
Protesters clashed with police in riot gear Sunday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, speaking out against the killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile of Minnesota.
New details are emerging of the gunman who killed five Dallas police officers in a planned attack on 7 July. Brown has served as police chief since 2010.
The large crime scene includes the parking garage where Johnson was killed and at least two other sites where he is believed to have fired at officers.
Chief James Craig said Sunday that the department’s counter-terrorism unit found that posting while monitoring social media.
Police officers grapple with “societal failures” over issues including mental health, drug addiction, and schooling that they’re not equipped to handle, Brown said. “Other options would have exposed our officers to great danger”, he said. Hundreds of people were arrested and dozens of officers were injured.
“They were in a funnel”, the chief said of his officers.
At one point, Johnson reportedly sang to officers and asked how many he had shot, Brown revealed.
