During the attack, the suspects made numerous derogatory remarks about the victim’s perceived sexual orientation. “It was very bad”, said Francisco Garcia who lives at the intersection where the attack happened.

Because the offense occurred after the Pride parade, “a day of historical significance in the GLBT community”, the report from police states, “preliminary investigation indicates that this offense meets the criteria of a hate crime”.
