Dan Carter, Sonny Bill Williams omitted from All Blacks squad for Springboks
New Zealand flyhalf Dan Carter and center Sonny Bill Williams have been omitted from a 31-man squad named Saturday to play South Africa in Johannesburg in next weekend’s second round of the Rugby Championship.
McCaw scored the first of New Zealand’s five tries in the 20th minute, while Carter kicked six goals from nine attempts to lift his world record points tally to 1,491 points in 104 Tests.
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has called for a change in rugby’s laws to allow defending sides to collapse “bloody boring” lineout drives.
Carter will quit New Zealand rugby after this year’s World Cup to play for Racing Metro in France, while McCaw will retire after leading the All Blacks in their World Cup title defence in September.
Winger Waisake Naholo, who made an impressive debut against Argentina, suffered a sprained ankle and is also out.
But the hosts took a step forward in their execution while they continued to develop a high-pace game plan, with captain Richie McCaw, Ma’a Nonu, Charles Piutau, Kieran Read and debutant Codie Taylor all scoring tries.
Although still short of their championship best, the All Blacks five tries to two domination was a marked improvement on their ragged warm-up outing against Samoa last week.
Hansen said he had been pleased with Naholo’s test debut.
Carter said that after the full-time whistle against Argentina, the All Blacks immediately began talking about the need for “a huge step up” in skill level for the Springboks Test.
The Pumas, who claimed their maiden Rugby Championship win in their final game of last season’s competition, got their first try in the 55th minute when Creevy crashed over after a lineout, and the hooker repeated the feat soon after with a copycat score.
“At the same time, we have to be courageous to find out a few answers to a few questions, and what better place to find that out”, he said.
Argentina played their part in making the rare Friday night Test an entertaining affair with a willingness to run the ball, but their attacks were starting too deep and were easily read by the All Blacks.
There is a chance Naholo could return for the latter stages of the tournament this autumn if another player is injured, but it appears highly unlikely he will feature for the All Blacks in the World Cup. “We’ve got to get versatility as well because you can’t replace players in the World Cup and then use them again”. “We are not happy with what we have shown today”. “But if you look at how they ended up there, it was probably our discipline, back-to-back penalties, that put us in that position”.
