Dana Holgorsen reportedly on hot seat at West Virginia despite meeting
A bad West Virginia second half led to the Mountaineers dropping their first game of the season. He had just two practices before returning to the court against West Virginia and going scoreless without taking a shot in the first half.
One of the best border rivalries in the country will add another chapter to the story on Tuesday evening when No. 10 Virginia plays No. 14 West Virginia in the Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic at the famed Madison Square Garden. Virginia (8-1) also got 14 points from guard Malcolm Brogdon and 10 from guard Darius Thompson.
Virginia used a near-perfect second half to outlast West Virginia 70-54, as the Cavaliers ground the game to a halt defensively.
Take that away from the WVU totals and the rest of the team shot just 13-39 with Carter and Daxter Miles Jr., the starting guards, making just 2-of-17 shots, none from 3-point range.
Perrantes came out firing in the second half.
Nine days after undergoing an appendectomy, Perrantes turned it up in the second half and helped the Cavaliers hand the Mountaineers (7-1) their first loss of the season.
“London, I don’t want to make an excuse for him…. but he practiced hard once, twice”, Bennett said. “We had them on the ropes (in the first half) and our motion was looking good”. They shot a scorching 74 percent in the second half as they went on a 47-19 run to end the game.
And that was how it started, with Virginia digging in but as the half went on the pressure took hold. Weest Virginia has only trailed for 13:42 out of a possible 280 minutes so far this season, are ranked first in the country in steals, first in the country in 3-point defense and first in nationally forced turnovers.
Iowa and Iowa State is a rivalry game that does not usually get much attention during basketball season because they are in different conferences. Gill finished 9 of 11 from the field while Perrantes was 5 of 6. “We absolutely got punched in the mouth”.
The only thing WVU had to be proud of was that “Press Virginia” did turn over the Virginia offense, which had been the toughest team to turn over in the nation at just 7 a game.
“London was disappointed in himself and he stepped up and hit some big shots and we needed him to handle the ball”. Virginia seniors Gill and Brogdon seemed to be all that were keeping the Cavaliers in it. Gill had two baskets in a late 7-1 push at the end of the half that cut the deficit to 36-30 at halftime. He brings a physical playing style that has earned the Mountaineers their “Press Virginia” moniker.
“They test your patience”, Huggins said. The ACC is once again loaded with elite competition, which means the one-loss Cavaliers can ill-afford to lose too many nonconference games if they hope to contend for a top seed in the NCAA tournament.
West Virginia is no longer undefeated after it won its first seven games, but it has a golden opportunity to start a new streak in the coming contests.
