Dana White Compares Robbie Lawler To Boxing Legend Evander Holyfield
Lawler (27-10) was awarded the decision after a 25-minute brawl that had the MGM Grand Garden Arena crowd on its collective feet in the fantastic fifth round.
“There (were) two winners tonight, and still, but let’s do it again”, he said.
“Carlos is tough – he can do it all”, Lawler said. However, this was a win for both fighters and not a loss for Condit.
“I’ve been at this for a long time, over 40 professional MMA fights, MMA and kickboxing”, he said, trying to explain his thoughts. He could perhaps be lured back by another shot at the belt, especially considering the nature of the fight and the support he received afterward, but if “The Natural Born Killer” is done for good, he’ll go down as one of the most thrilling competitors the welterweight division has seen.
Lawler found his payback with a thunderous right hand in the second round, dropping Condit in the process. The two went back and forth until the final bell, leaving both men completely exhausted. Judges Chris Lee and Derek Cleary each had it 48-47, or three rounds to two, for Lawler. He is coming off a TKO win over Thiago Alves last May, but is just 2-3 in his last five fights. And I feel very confident that it is …
In the third, the judges were split, with Cleary and Lee giving the nod to the champion, who landed a defining right elbow to the face and absorbed a lesser elbow and right hand from Condit.
At the same time, it was violent and furious, with Condit constantly attacking with combinations and Lawler charging forward with power in the final round, looking to finish, many believing he needed to in order to retain his title.
Condit was previously the interim welterweight champion, but then he lost to Georges St-Pierre three years ago for the official belt. He expressed appreciation for Lawler’s heart.
Welterweight champion Robbie Lawler will continue to rely on the basics when he defends his title against Carlos Condit at UFC 195 in Las Vegas this weekend.
The first four rounds saw a contrast in game plans, with Condit (30-9) the busier man but mostly utilizing his diverse arsenal of kicks and punches to keep the fight at distance – and keep himself out of range of the explosive Lawler.
Referee Herb Dean eventually waved off the fight after Miocic rained more punches while Arlovski was on the ground.
I think this fight will play out similar to Lawler’s last encounter (fight of the year performance against Rory MacDonald). He has unsettled business with Johny Hendricks after the two split a pair of closely contested championship fights in 2014.
