Dangerous Heat and Flash Flooding Ahead
The organization said isolated rainfall of 2 to 4 inches is possible, which could lead to flash flooding. Additional heavy rain is expected from these slow-moving storms.
Some locations that will experience flooding include Tallahassee, Florida A&M, Doak Campbell Stadium, Florida State University, Tallahassee Comm College, Innovation park, Forest Meadows Park, Fallschase, and surrounding areas. Those storms will slowly slide south into Central Iowa by 10 PM and rains will continue to fall heavy through mid-night. The threat may be extended into early Friday, officials said.
Widespread rainfall amounts of one to three inches may be common with localized amounts of four to six inches possible.
“It will probably start this afternoon or this evening, but we really don’t expect flooding issues before Saturday”, said NWS Meteorologist Kelly Cooper.
In southern Alabama, a flash flood watch was in effect Friday along the Gulf coast.
Moderate to high rises are expected on small streams and rivers with minor rises on mainstream rivers.
Friday morning began mostly cloudy, hot, and humid with temperatures expected to rise into the upper 80s throughout the day. It will be warm and very humid, so heavy rainfall will be a possibility with the storms that track through.
The weather service advises turning around rather than driving through an area that is beginning to flood, and notes that most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
