Daniel Craig Publicly Supports Bernie Sanders for President
The actor, however, famous for his portrayal of MI6 spy James Bond, gave money to a group that Sanders has disavowed.
Calling his pro-Sander Super Pac Americans Socially United, Peterson, Integrity explains, describes himself as a “lobbyist” and “diplomat”.
In July, Craig donated $47,300 to Americans Socially United, a super PAC that was forced to change its name from “Bet on Bernie 2016” after the FEC determined it did “not appear to be an authorized committee of that candidate”. They are not able to make contributions to candidate campaigns or parties, but can support campaigns independently.
The Center for Public Integrity questions the role of the super PAC’s founder, Cary Lee Peterson, including money owed to creditors and outstanding warrants in Arizona.
Super PACs are political action committees that can raise unlimited funds for a candidate, contrary to a regular PAC which can only accept up to a certain amount per person.
Americans Socially United’s website, BetonBernie.com, has attracted donors who don’t realize it isn’t connected to Bernie Sanders’ campaign.
Since Sanders is famously against taking super PAC and corporate money – and has even asked Peterson to stop fundraising on his behalf – there are questions about what Peterson is actually doing with the money.
Through his publicist, Craig confirmed to CPI that he did donate to Peterson’s group and that he so far “had no evidence to question that my donation has not been used as intended”. “Should that situation occur, then clearly, I will review my position”.
Peterson told the CPI that his super PAC is on the up and up and can and will continue fundraising for Sanders with or without his permission.
Bernie’s Camp though? Less than impressed. The Center for Public Integrity reported that Sanders’ legal counsel told him in a June letter: “While Bernie 2016 is grateful for your enthusiasm, we are compelled to inform you that your current efforts are illegal and are causing harmful confusion for supporters of Senator Sanders’ campaign”.
Sanders campaign officials declined to comment.
