Daniel Handler (author Lemony Snicket) and Illustrator Lisa Brown Donate $1
Daniel Handler, better known as Lemony Snicket, has made a $1 million donation to Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood, which survived a lashing on the Hill today, thanked the Handlers.
The fact that the title of Handler’s book series reflected the embattled women’s health organization’s current situation was not lost on Brown.
Handler has commented on the organization before, in a 2007 essay titled “Adjusted Income” for The New York Times, in which he wrote, “
If your salary equaled the amount of money my wife and I gave Planned Parenthood one year, you’d be in the richest 1 per cent in the world.”
“This year, Planned Parenthood has gone through a series of unfortunate events, and it felt right to make our support more public and more dramatic”, she continued.
When asked about their connection to Planned Parenthood, the pair said they’re simply “Americans and human beings” who “believe in people making their own reproductive choices”. Just 3 percent of the organization’s funding goes toward abortions, which are, of course, a legal procedure Planned Parenthood provides.
Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards took to Capital Hill this week for a four hour-oftentimes contentious-hearing of the House Oversight Committee.
A social media campaign has also been waged with the hashtag #standwithPP to spread support and Facebook users showed support by turning profile pictures pink on Tuesday declaring it #PinkOut day.
