Daniel Sturridge return gives Jurgen Klopp healthy problem up front – Ian Rush
“In the league they will play a good role in the rest of the season”.
“He was caught in possession once early in the second half but, aside from that, he was nearly flawless”.
“You are not going to play well every week and you are going to come up against hard conditions”.
The 21-year-old completed the highest number of passes for his side (80) at an 83 percent accuracy. We will take it game by game and do it again on Wednesday (against Southampton in the Capital One Cup).
“I hear Southampton and Liverpool are not the best friends”, Klopp told reporters.
Yet their laboured home displays still contrast starkly with their scintillating away form which delivered victory over Chelsea at the end of last month as well as City. It was another grind at home against Swansea and they’ll probably prefer being able to play on the counter-attack again here.
Liverpool’s last visit to Southampton ended in a 2-0 win for the visitors in February. It was good for us.
Liverpool’s record goalscorer Ian Rush believes the return of Daniel Sturridge has finally given manager Jurgen Klopp something to think about up front.
“I would like to feel better and say “Three days off celebrating a good week” but we don’t have time for this”.
“We had (Philippe) Coutinho, (Roberto) Firmino, (Adam) Lallana and now you have Benteke and that is a good thing”. The Saints have a really solid team and they will be tough to break down.
Southampton conceded three during the clash and the news of Fonte’s injury comes as a further blow to Koeman as they look to bring some silverware back to the South Coast. I think that the Saints will really fancy their chances here and I can see Saint Mary’s being packed and the atmosphere should be excellent.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the game, Klopp said: “We cannot ignore that this game could have overtime; 120 minutes would be too much for both [Sturridge and Henderson]”.
And Monk said: “I thought it was a soft decision and to lose the game when it is out of your hands like that is disappointing”.
Liverpool were on top for large spells prior to Milner’s goal shortly after the hour but lacked a cutting edge without playmaker Philippe Coutinho, who was not risked following a hamstring problem picked up in the 4-1 win over Manchester City.
“One player in the dressing room had 20 knocks, and when we asked him where the pain was, he said everywhere”.
