Danny Duffy pitches Royals to win over Cardinals
A bird flew right into the vision of Royals third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert during the second inning of Tuesday night’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. If the opposition doesn’t get to Wainwright within the first three innings, scoring runs becomes hard against him.
Meanwhile, Duffy was using pinpoint control to breeze through a lineup that scored 11 runs the previous day against Seattle.
Duffy has been the Royals’ best starter for a while. But after beginning the season in the bullpen, he had struggled to go deep in games; his longest outing all year was 6 1/3 innings in a loss at Baltimore.
Kendrys Morales tied the game in the bottom of the first when he lined a single over Matt Carpenter’s head against the shift to score the tying runs. Take St. Louis over Kansas City for another Best Bet victor.
Wainwright must have figured something out – he retired 10 of his next 11 batters.
The Royals batted around in a four-run second against Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright, who finished the inning with 69 pitches.
Wainwright left after five innings with seven strikeouts, 10 hits, and four earned runs. “They did a real nice job with two strikes and two outs”, said Wainwright. “Just a very solid effort”.
Cardinals shortstop Aledmys Diaz, who had two doubles against Duffy, left in the ninth after fouling a pitch in the dirt that ricocheted and struck him in the face. “Obviously, when the inflammation goes down, I hope to be able to keep helping the team”. Hosmer (1B) and Perez (C) lead the AL at their positions, while Cardinals C Yadier Molina tops voting at his in the NL. Yost, who will manage the American League squad, said, “I think we’re going to be in pretty good shape”, when asked about Kansas City representation. Adams has been out since Wednesday.
Ventura lost to the Cardinals twice last season, 6-2 on May 24 at Kansas City and 5-0 on June 12 at St. Louis. Wacha won for the first time in almost two months his last time out against the Cubs.
