Danny Lee Wins Greenbrier Classic in 4-Man Playoff
REUTERS: ex- teenage prodigy Danny Lee parred the second extra hole to win a four-way playoff at the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia on Sunday (Jul 5).
Kisner and Streb both missed the green and could not chip in for birdie.
“I went for it and obviously didn’t touch the ball, twice”.
“I meant to lightly land it next to my bag”, he later explained, insisting that he didn’t hurl the club in anger.
“I only wish I had a girlfriend so it wouldn’t be so lonely in the room”, said the Rotorua-educated, South Korea-born star. Lee was rewarded with a short birdie putt, which he drained to tie the leaders. Lee laid up into the fairway, then hit his third to about 60 feet.
After two previous appearances ended in a missed cut (2012) and last year’s tie for 16th, Lee said the Greenbrier has become one of his favorite destinations. Hearn (67) and Lee (67) birdied the par-5 17th to join the playoff.
“I was just trying to calm down”, Lee said about facing a play-off.
“It’s wonderful just wonderful”. “I was so close a lot of times this year, but I’m glad to know what it feels like to win on the PGA Tour now”. “I really feel as if I’m playing pretty well right now”. Robert saved par on the 12th and then drained a 30-foot birdie putt on 13 to put himself one shot off the lead. Seven players finished at 11 under – Hahn, Greg Owen, Andres Romero, Lingmerth, Brendon Todd, Collins and Molder.
Lee and Hearn earned places in next week’s Open Championship on the Old Course at St. Andrews. Case in point: Tiger Woods shot 80 at the US Open and was optimistic.
Lee said he would need a bit of time to “digest” what he had achieved. He 3-putted for bogey on nine and 4-putted for double-bogey at 10.
Speaking of spectacular days, Streb kept everyone entertained when he accidentally broke his putter on the front nine and was forced to putt with his wedge for the remainder of his round. He birdied No. 13 to make it four leaders. After eight consecutive pars, he finished with another birdie on the 18th.
He might have won the tournament in regulation had he not three-putted for a bogey at No. 17. Lee made par to won the tournament. “I had it all on call”. I just hope plenty of other New Zealand and Korean golfers can come out here.
This was Kisner’s third play-off loss this year after he was beaten by Jim Furyk in a two-hole playoff at the RBC Heritage in April and by Rickie Fowler in a tense four-hole playoff at The Players Championship in May.
