Darren McGregor: I had Premiership offers but couldn’t turn down Hibernian
Asked why he had fallen out of favour at Ibrox, McGregor said: “I’m not sure to be honest – anybody who knows football will know that it’s a game of opinions and you are only as good as your last game”. It’s somewhere I think I can improve and hopefully I will.
In the north east, Dick Advocaat, the former Rangers manager, could be heading for the end of his tenure at Sunderland after the Dutchman criticised owner Ellis Short and revealed that he is not happy at the Stadium of Light. “It’s like leaving family members behind, because you do build up a rapport with them, but football is very cut-throat and I need to move on to new objectives now”.
‘When we walked into the dressing room after the Hibs game I felt personally that we weren’t totally satisfied, ‘ said Kiernan, whose side face Airdrie tonight away in the League Cup.
“He and Davie [Weir] were great with me and I’ve only got positives to talk about Rangers Football Club”.
“I honestly thought that door had closed but it has now fortunately opened and I’ve landed on my feet”.
“I think there were a couple of teams interested but it was never really discussed in full”.
“I’ve supported Hibs my whole life, so to now get the opportunity to sign for the club is brilliant”, McGregor told the Hibs’ website.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he added: “I felt in the first half with the way Hibs tried to slow our intensity down we dropped to their level, so to speak, and they were on top for spells and probably could have scored”. I liked my time there and don’t want to fall out with anyone but it was a little bit cheeky to hear lies.
Stubbs said: “We’re delighted to be able to welcome Darren into the group – his arrival provides real competition for places”. Rangers have very good players in good areas but so have Hibs. We talk about a lot of centre backs being ball players now but for me his best attributes are in defending.
McGregor meanwhile was delighted to finalise the deal which sees him move back to Edinburgh and adorn the famous green and white strip.
