David Bowie had liver cancer, said friend
People are remembering today what a phenomenal musician David Bowie was, and of course that was the case.
Bowie’s supermodel wife Iman, who has not commented publicly on his death, posted a series of poignant messages on social media in the days before he passed away.
The museum had been prepared to host the exhibition over Bowie’s 69th birthday and the release of his new album.
He performed a duet with British stadium band Queen on “Under Pressure”, wrote the song “Fame” with John Lennon and more recently collaborated with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame on “I’m Afraid of Americans”.
“Obviously this is a very sad day”, he said before the footage rolled.
On the question of why her son chose not to see her, she said: “I guess David told him not to”.
Desperate not to disappoint his fans despite his poor health, the Starman hitmaker attended the December premiere of his musical in NY but “collapsed from exhaustion” behind the scenes. But as we went off the stage, he collapsed. “We will take to the grave the moments we shared; talking, playing music and collaborating as some of the most profound and memorable moments of our lives”.
On Monday, Bowie’s long-term producer and friend Tony Visconti confirmed that the musician had intended Blackstar to be a “parting gift” for fans.
The Royals singer explained, “I’ve never met a hero of mine and liked it. It just sucks, the pressure is too huge, you can’t enjoy it. David was different”.
Despite seeming “very fragile, physically, not mentally” during rehearsals, the director said Bowie fought through his illness and refused to stop working.
He said: “I think, generally, I just can not really envision life without writing and producing records, and singing”. He will always be with us. The likes of Bowie and his many avatars will now be a part of history, hopefully discovered time and time over in the coming years.
