David Bowie once rejected Coldplay collab: ‘It’s not a very good song’
David Bowie is the other 1%, where it’s an honor for the Starman to even consider you as worthy of a response.
In a new interview with NME, Coldplay’s Will Champion explains that they took a loss when they reached out to David Bowie for a collaboration.
“We’ve all loved his music for, well, as well as long as we have known about music”.
“One time I sent him a song to ask him to sing on it. He called me and said, ‘It’s not one of your best, ‘” Martin said.
Bucklan and Champion revealed that they, along with frontman Chris Martin, once had an idea to collaborate with Bowie on a song Coldplay wrote, featuring a character they though ideal for Bowie to play. “And he came back and said, ‘It’s not a very good song, is it?’ …” Watch them reminisce about Bowie and recount the story below. “For genres, and for how to be a rockstar or a pop star, whatever it was”. “So I’ll give him credit for that”.
The band remember it fondly though, with Champion saying “He was very discerning – he wouldn’t just put his name to anything. Completely defining that. So for musicians it’s quite disorienting”.
