David Bowie prepared daughter for his death
Bowie’s first starring role tapped into two of his major musical stages: The “2001: A Space Odyssey“-influenced Major Tom of his song “Space Oddity”, and of course the early-Seventies Ziggy Stardust efforts that flipped that song on its head”. He and Iman welcomed a daughter in 2000: Alexandria Zahra Jones, known as “Lexi”. “And I’m so glad I chose that to be my profession”, he said.
“That she would be my wife, in my head, was a done deal”, he said. Plus, he only spent time with what I would call ‘his entourage.’ So outside of acting together, we never had dinner or spent any non-working time together. But the reason you know it, even if you don’t know you know it, is that it’s also had a second life as the ultimate soundtrack song, creating the flawless ambiance for movies and shows of all kinds – by acting as the backdrop to cinematic journeys both literal and emotional, or just expressing the disconnected, drifting loneliness of heroes who are trapped in outer space, emotionally speaking.
Given his rock star excesses – he was a long-time smoker and heavy drug user – Bowie put his health under strain for many years.
“I was not ready for a relationship”. Last year, he was named 15th on The Sunday Times Top 40 music millionaires in Britain and Ireland.
David Bowie’s final farewell is as enigmatic as the man himself. “I’ve been trying to work another song from Ziggy into the sequel”, Gunn writes. He’s a singer, an entertainer. The moment that she was told will not be televised. The 21st century had barely gotten off to a start; the first wave of the Internet mania had collapsed; Apple had barely released the iPod; and it was in June 2002 that Bowie predicted: “Music itself is going to become like running water or electricity”. “And when you get older, this applies to me (as well), you think about the things you want to do and how it will be perceived by your children one day. I was sure of it. Today feels like the end of everything!” This comment speaks to Bowie’s view of music – or any art for that matter – as something that should transcend boundaries and defy categorization.
When asked by People magazine how they keep romance alive, Bowie had said, “Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation generally does the trick!”
“He validated me and made me realise I was not alone”. But simply looking at The Thin White Duke through that lens is like if Bowie had gone through life only observing the world with his one blue eye. We remember him not only for his uniqueness and genius contribution to the world of music, film, and theater, but also for his deep love and devotion to the woman who captured his heart.
