David Bowie was feeling ‘optimistic’ about new cancer drug just weeks before

It was announced yesterday that a tribute would be paid to Bowie at the Brit awards next month, celebrating what Brit chairman Max Lousada described as the “extraordinary life and work of one of our greatest icons”.

Bowie died peacefully Sunday January 10th at the age of 69 after an 18 month battle with cancer. “He told me more than one year and three months ago that he had liver cancer, just after he had been told himself”, Van Hove told Dutch radio station NOS.nl.

Bowie had kept his terminal liver cancer secret for over a year, sharing the information with only those closest to him, Belgian theatre director Ivo van Hove said.

Though his condition would improve after Blackstar was completed, Bowie was treating the album as his final project during its recording.

“The cast didn’t know all that time, and I suspect that the musicians with whom he recorded “Blackstar” didn’t know either”. The singer’s final album was released on Friday to coincide with his 69th birthday, and was already on track to reach the top spot.
