David Johnston calls arrival of Syrian refugees a ‘defining moment’ for Canada
A seemingly compassionate statement posted on Facebook by Republican presidential hopeful Dr. Ben Carson after his visit, along with his wife, Candy, to a refugee camp in Jordan where Syrian civilians have sought shelter, reiterated the broad Republican position against letting any of them into the US.
Canada, which has said all necessary security checks would be made before refugees are flown in, has sent 500 officials to Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon to oversee the effort.
In television interviews on Sunday, Carson, who has faced scrutiny over his foreign policy credentials, said he found facilities there to be “really quite nice” and that people there would rather stay or return home to Syria than go to the United States.
“It is a safe haven for them”, Carson said of the camps, adding, “Bringing a few thousand of them here doesn’t even begin to solve the problem”.
He said the refugees and officials he met with during his trip to Jordan stressed the need for more funding to help with the people in the refugee camps now. “Having said that, my suspicion is that these people are incredibly resilient and courageous folk who have managed to endure these circumstances and we will be impressed by their resilience”.
CBN Disaster Relief partners with many Christian groups around the world that are inside the refugee camps building churches and Christian schools, while also providing people with food, water, blankets, and many other necessities. Applicants are being told to expect travel by the end of February, the deadline the government has set.
Numerous refugees Canada will resettle will be women, some alone, some heads of families.
Over the Thanksgiving weekend, Carson attempted to address those concerns by visiting a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan.
There is a reason so many people from Syria are risking their lives to reach Europe and the U.S. They are fleeing the Middle East because they are unsafe.
“They are in desperate need of serious psychological help and support to overcome the trauma and the horror they have been through”, their study said this year. “I want to be very clear that I am willing to go to Canada!” she interrupts. “We get into our separate corners and we hate each other; we want to destroy those with whom we disagree”, Carson said.
Between November 4, and November 26, 2015, 200 Syrian refugees arrived in Canada.
Carson called for other countries in the region, including Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait, to do more to help the refugees. “That is not going to have an impact on what’s going on in that situation”, Colyer said.
“The office of the Governor General is here to connect, honour and inspire Canadians, and to encourage us to be a smarter, more caring nation”, he said.
