David Mundell calling on SNP to end Brexit ‘doom-mongering’
The research is a blow for Scottish Nationalist First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who hoped to use the Brexit vote in June-which saw Scotland vote to remain in the European Union but the U.K.as a whole vote to leave-to revitalize her party’s case for independence.
A rally of independence supporters is to be held at Glasgow Green, with planned speakers said to include SNP MP and deputy leadership candidate Tommy Sheppard.
The poll found that 15% of those who gave a view on independence had changed their minds on how they would vote in a future referendum as a result of the Brexit vote, while 79% said they had not.
He said: ‘I would expect Nicola Sturgeon to fulfil her mandate to keep Scotland within the single marketplace.
Salmond, who said at the beginning of the weekend of celebrations of the referendum that he estimated 2018 as the likely time for another referendum, said that he took this position because he believed that Current First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s mission to protect Scotland’s place in the European Union would fail.
The First Minister has suggested that she will call another second independence referendum if Theresa May fails to prevent a “hard Brexit” with the country outside the single market.
“I fully expect, my reading of the situation is, the United Kingdom will not be flexible or wise enough to do that, and therefore I expect there’ll be a Scottish referendum in roughly two years’ time”.
Former Better Together campaigners will also mark the event.
Over the summer Nicola Sturgeon visited both Brussels and Germany as part of a charm offensive to retain European Union membership, either as an independent nation or part of the UK.
And a survey released this week said more than half of Scots oppose a second referendum.
But several polls this month show an only slight increase in support for Scottish independence since 2014, not enough to win.
Two years after the historic September 18 ballot, the Conservatives warned continuing uncertainty over the constitution would act as a “ball and chain on Scotland’s economic prospects”.
“Given the complete mess the UK Government has made of the EU referendum result and their relationship with the European Union, perhaps they should focus on improving their own relationships with EU governments rather than running around desperately trying to smear Scotland’s reputation overseas”.
Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said the SNP should “renew its focus on the day job”.
“The pretence that we had two years ago that somehow independence would be economically beneficial, that it would lead to prosperity in Scotland has been abandoned”.
“Scotland’s voice was heard in 2014 and Nicola Sturgeon needs to listen to it”.
“Instead of trying to explain what would happen to our economy and how we fund our public services under independence, the new mantra is that none of these things matter anymore and people should just shut up about them and wrap themselves in a flag instead”.
