David Price excited to get started with Red Sox
“I think I was just saving all my postseason wins for the Red Sox”, Price said on Friday during his introductory news conference in a Fenway Park function room filled with championship memorabilia.
Price is 6-1 with a 1.95 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 11 career starts (74 innings) at Fenway Park. The recent signing of David Price undoubtedly makes Boston a strong post season contender for 2016 and beyond. His deal tops the $215 million Clayton Kershaw will earn from the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2014-20.
The Red Sox went 78-84 and finished in last place in the AL East for the second straight year (and third time in the past four) in 2015. “And that’s the game of baseball and life and I’m definitely open to cheering for Big Papi whenever he’s at bat and I think we’re going to have a good relationship”.
“If I come anywhere close to meeting the expectations that I set for myself, I’m pretty positive that everybody will be happy with that”, Price said. The five-time All-Star selection has a 2-7 record with a 5.12 ERA in 14 career playoff games.
Someone asking about his “feud” with David Ortiz was obviously inevitable, but Price had the right answer. But Price already has an AL Cy Young Award. He gave the example of how Ian Kinsler and him couldn’t stand each before being traded to the Detroit Tigers, but got over it very quickly. “I want to be a part of a team that is as young as we are, and that can stay young the way that we can, just to be around those guys, to help them, to be a part of something like this”. “He’s a big-game pitcher”.
The attitude, Hazen said, was: “If I’m going to sign here long-term, I want to know who my teammates are going to be long-term”.
The sides agreed to the terms of the deal on Tuesday, but had to wait for Price to pass his physical.
It is not unusual to see him hanging around the dugout after he gets shelled, something that not every pitcher does and if you ask any ex-teammate about him, you will only hear good things. He’s a lot of fun, too, so the Boston fans are going to really embrace him.
