Davis Love Names Three to US Ryder Cup Team

Davis Love III has expressed full confidence in his captain’s picks for the United States’ Ryder Cup team, despite acknowledging the difficulty he and his backroom team faced in selecting three additional players for the event.

However, on September 7, the 14-time major champion announced a potential return to action on his personal website, declaring the Safeway Open, which starts October 13, his goal. Regardless, if the 12 were already decided and Watson didn’t make that cut, then it only mattered if the nine-time PGA Tour victor managed to play his way onto the team on points.

Captains can certainly get in the way of winning – as Corey Pavin did by letting his wife take over the captaincy in 2010 and as the socially inept Nick Faldo did in alienating his team in 2008 – but the truth in the Ryder Cup’s the same as it ever was.

He noted Monday that he’s a captain’s pick for the first time rather than automatically earning his spot. “We know how to handle it, how to deal with it”, Love said.

By leaving Watson off the team in the first wave of picks, Love has time to identify a final player that he feels could match up with at least one of the other 11 players to form a possible two-man team.

“It stinks for me to be sitting on the outside needing a pick”, Kuchar said.

There can’t be much argument with the trio that Love III has already pencilled in. Holmes is now second on the PGA Tour in driving distance and is coming off of a top-four finish at the BMW Championship on Sunday.

Europe has won the past three Ryder Cups, and six of the past seven. “For me to make this team, I can’t wait to make amends and try to bring the Cup home”.

Last month, Clarke named Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and rookie Thomas Pieters as his three wildcards.

Love is as conservative a thinker as his North Carolina background suggests, so there were no real surprises – Bryson DeChambeau, anybody? – though he did leave out Bubba Watson, who is the seventh-ranked player in the world.
