Davis: Raiders not in ‘lame duck’ situation in Oakland
But, as with so much of the city’s efforts, the promises appear to have fallen well short of expectations as Goodell’s reply was swift, and damning. According to the L.A. Times, Chargers owner Dean Spanos had voiced his intentions to vote “yes”, and Rams owner Stan Kroenke was also believed to be in favor of the relocation.
The Raiders are moving to Las Vegas, but they’ll spend at least the next two seasons in Oakland while their new stadium is built. Relocating teams isn’t ideal, but sometimes it is necessary.
The Rams moved from St. Louis to Los Angeles in 2016, and in January the Chargers relocated from San Diego to LA. The Raiders kicked off their history in the AFL in Oakland in 1960, but moved to Los Angeles for the 1982 season.
In the days leading up to Monday’s potential vote, Oakland went “all in” in hopes of enticing the franchise to stick with its original home. The Raiders will play in Oakland for 2017, have the option to pick up the lease for 2018, and if they get into a real jam, can work out a deal to play in the Niners’ Levi Stadium in 2019.
It has significant infrastructural problems with burst pipes, sewage leaking out onto the concourses and amenities that make the old Páirc Uí Chaoimh look like the world’s most advanced stadium. The Raiders will visit Lincoln Financial Field again this year, and the Eagles don’t play the AFC again until 2021. Their new stadium – which, judging by the early renderings, will be gorgeous and surely will host a Super Bowl within the next decade – isn’t expected to open until 2020.
Minnesotans are counting down until February 4, 2018, when Super Bowl LII is hosted at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Al Davis died in 2011. He’d later renege, claiming that the Raiders owners had shut him out of talks, but this proved to be only a minor speed bump.
In addition, teams will vote on new rules to protect “defenseless receivers” from hard tackles, as well as whether to bar special teams players from leaping over the line of scrimmage to block extra point and field goal attempts.
It was just a few years ago, the National Football League refused to allow the city to even advertise on the Super Bowl telecast for fear of contaminating the game.
How well they will be received over that period by the disgruntled locals they are leaving behind remains to be seen – though Davis has promised to refund season-ticket deposits this term – and the team’s quarterback Derek Carr expressed his mixed feelings in a post on Twitter.
“This is not the first time they’ve moved, but it seems like we’ve lost them forever now”, Gudino said. Sources have told ESPN that the Raiders have enough votes for approval. “They want things right now”.
The silver and black fades to green.
