Day Wins the PGA Championship
Northern Irishman McIlroy, now aged 26, won the last two majors of 2014 and the remarkable Spieth, who celebrated his 22nd birthday last month, clinched the first two majors this year before tying for fourth at the British Open and finishing second behind Day at the PGA Championship on Sunday. It was never in doubt that he was a good victor, but to do it in a Major is what reaching the top is all about.
Louis Oosthuizen, with a sweet swing and a fragile back, was one shot behind at the U.S. Open and lost in a playoff at St. Andrews.
Tigers Woods’ 2000 is the gold standard for golf seasons, but Jordan Spieth’s 2015 hasn’t been too far off.
Brooks Koepka, 25, finished tied for fifth after shooting 67-66 on the weekend. “I think he’s lost and he continues to go in the wrong direction”.
Jordan Spieth believes he faces a battle to hold on to his new position as world number one from a “fearless” generation of young players.
“I’ve changed so much from where I was and what I saw as a kid to where I am now”, Day said.
Whereas the golfer’s success has been good for Underneath Armour and its rising golf enterprise, his turning into No. 1 did not pop the inventory as his Masters and U.S. Open wins did.
Day, who had a tough upbringing, losing his father Alvyn to cancer when he was 12 and turning to alcohol and street gangs before his mother, sister and best mate Swatton came to his rescue, was struggling for words to describe how it felt to have such a special record beside his name.
But after sharing the lead going into the final round, he was unable to overcome the vertigo that nearly forced him to withdraw during the event, eventually slipping down into a tie for ninth, again behind Spieth.
We know fans can be pretty cold when rooting for their favorite players, but many of them probably didn’t know Day’s story. We would put the kettle on and go have a shower, and then my mom would come bring three or four kettles in, just to heat them up.
Six of the last seven major championships have been won by twenty-somethings, proof positive that the “Big Five” era of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen is over. He was 14 under at the PGA Championship. “He played like a champion and he fully deserved this win“. That includes the previous three British Opens before this year: Mickelson, Ernie Els and Darren Clarke. It’s a shame we have to wait 233 days for the next major.
World No. 7 Dustin Johnson has had an eventful year to say the least, but he has yet to break through the majors barrier.
Spieth said he relishes the excitement and pressure of playing major championships, but joked that one of the reasons he has a receding hairline is because of the stress they create.
“I thought 14-under par would be great”, Rose said Sunday at Whistling Straits. “Rory and Jordan obviously have been leading the way”. But the road to the top was a unique and hard one for Jason Day. I am sure this is just the start of an incredible journey for him. If it wasn’t me, I was kind of pulling for Jason.
