DC mayor asks residents, visitors to stay off roads
In Silver Spring, Maryland, about 20 inches of snow was measured outside by daybreak.
Another 6 to 10 inches of snow is expected to fall and wind gusts are also a concern. Officials urged people to stay off the roads if possible.

“Two feet of snow, that is a big deal, big stresses we are looking at, we are looking at this morning and through today (Friday) that residents are ready”, says Chris Geldart, director of D.C. Homeland Security and Management.
“We’ve had a forecast that I don’t think we’ve had in 90 years”, Ms. Bowser said.
She says: “You never imagine yourself being out here for five hours during a snowstorm”.
Snowfall is expected to start in the New York City area between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Friday. All told, state police dispatch centers fielded 3,471 calls during that period. Geller said Trooper M.D. Jester is being treated for minor injuries in a Richmond hospital.
Still, he says, skiing and snowboarding will be excellent at the state’s four major resorts: Snowshoe Mountain, Canaan Valley, Winterplace and Timberline.
Atlantic City Electric customers have been the hardest hit with more than 32,000 without power.
The mayor warned of high winds and potential power outages from trees taking down electrical lines.
Waters says the $15 will be in addition to the regular metered charge. While Humvees from the National Guard are standing by, the city has largely been able to use its own emergency vehicles. Officials say there are no reported fatalities so far.
“It could take them days, even a week, to dig out local roads”. All public schools in the region will be closed Friday. It turned I-75 in both directions in Rockcastle and Laurel counties into a parking lot.
“I want residents to be safe throughout this storm”, she said. The American Red Cross was providing food to stranded drivers.
There have been nine deaths covering three states – Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina – as a result of this storm.
Bowser said Saturday in a news conference that people should not be driving or walking in the streets. “It is an extremely large storm…conditions could change at any given moment”.
A coastal flood warning was issued for Virginia, New Jersey and the southern coast of Long Island. Coastal flood warnings and watches are in effect from Virginia to MA.
A winter storm warning remains in effect until noon Friday.
– Central NJ: Parts of central New Jersey could see up to 18 inches. Various locations in Georgia and Alabama received between 1 and 3.5 inches of snow.
All flights into and out of Philadelphia International Airport have been canceled for Saturday, when the blizzard conditions are expected to be in full swing.
