De’Andre Johnson apologizes for hitting woman, wishes he walked away
“It was a tough meeting for both De’Andre and Coach Fisher”, said Mark Griffin, Johnson’s family’s pastor.
Johnson, 19, from Jacksonville, declined to say whether he had been drinking prior to the altercation.
“There is no explanation for that”, Johnson said.
FSU dismissed freshman QB De’Andre Johnson.
Florida State president John Thrasher met with the program’s football players and coaches on Monday after the incident involving Johnson and running back Dalvin Cook, who was suspended indefinitely after an arrest for allegedly punching a woman in the face outside a bar last month. I know I wasn’t raised that way.
“What matters is that I shouldn’t have raised my hand to her. I should have walked away”, Johnson said.
This was, of course, more than two weeks after he punched a woman in a Tallahassee bar, after his attorney tried to spin surveillance camera evidence of this punch by saying he was the target of a racial epithet, and after he was charged with misdemeanor battery and was kicked off the team. Johnson was accompanied by his mother during the interview, which aired Tuesday morning. “I cried for three days. I’m so sorry”, Jones said.
“I still cry, ’cause I don’t teach my kids to raise their hand… and for this to happen, I’m sorry”. “I wanted to jump through the phone and ring his neck”, she added.
While Johnson’s contrition might serve to begin repairing public perception about his character, the future of his football career remains uncertain. As they move forward with that plan, I will continue to communicate with you regarding steps that will be taken.
“It doesn’t matter”, Johnson said. While Johnson claims he didn’t start the incident, he says that doesn’t excuse his actions.
Strahan afterward pointed out that Johnson is now volunteering at a battered women’s shelter, while also mentioning that the woman involved was contacted as well but had no comment. “No words can describe this feeling”, he said.
