‘Dead’ Chinese baby awakes just before cremation
Workers at the crematorium in Pan’an in the eastern province of Zhejiang were preparing to cremate the baby on Friday when he suddenly starting moaning, provincial television reported. According to Channel Six, the father of the baby boy, named only as Lu, insisted on taking him out of incubation a week earlier than doctors had recommended to bring him home for Chinese New Year.
But within two days Mr Lu rushed his newborn son back to hospital in the city of Jinhua after he started showing signs of discolouration. Sadly, the boy was declared dead less than one month later.
Two days after going home, the baby began turning blue and was returned to the hospital, where his heart stopped beating.
The boy’s remains were then wrapped in two blankets and kept in a freezer in the hospital mortuary.
The baby had spent 15 hours in the refrigerator at a temperature of about 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
At 6 p.m. that day, Lu brought An An to the Pan’an Funeral Home’s morgue.
The worker cancelled the cremation and contacted the father. Moments before he was set to be cremated, the baby boy was crying, reported the Express.
The baby was rushed for emergency care, and is still under observation.
The hospital’s director admitted that it was a mistake of the hospital employees because they failed to confirm the infant’s death a second time before they issued the death certificate.
The head of pediatrics, Doctor Chen, called it a “miracle” and added, “I have been a pediatrician for over 20 years”.
Dr Chen said that although the baby was being given emergency care, his odds of survival were low.
