Deadly Attacks In Kabul
The United States reaffirmed strong support to Afghanistan following deadly attacks in capital Kabul which left scores of people dead or wounded.
An Interior Ministry statement said that a suicide auto bombing struck close to a building belonging to the charity CARE International in Shar-e Naw late Monday night, after which three more attackers entered the building. The exact target of the attack is not yet known.
“In fact, repeated terrorist attacks in Kabul have caused a kind of psychological problems among people, security situation is deteriorated, economic activities have been undermined due to increasing security incidents and even food security has been affected”, a political analyst Assadullah Walwalji told local media on Tuesday.
Three armed men who had launched the offensive were also gunned down by Afghan security forces.
Their whereabouts are still unknown and no group so far has publicly claimed responsibility for the abductions.
It said its staff had been safely evacuated.
The attack follows a devastating double bombing Monday afternoon against the Defense Ministry that killed 35 people and wounded at least 91 in the latest sign of the Taliban’s ability to attack at the center of the government’s power.
“When the explosion happened, all of our windows broke and for a minute I thought that the house had collapsed on us”, said Togrul Big who lives near the Care International compound and suffered a hand injury in the car-bomb blast.
High-level defense officials were among those killed, including a young military officer.
Ambulances were overwhelmed by the carnage outside the defense ministry on Monday. But there were so many bodies that some had to be taken to hospitals in auto boots and the back of police pickup trucks.
Firemen raced to retrieve some bodies thrown into the Kabul River by the force of the blast.
President Ashraf Ghani strongly condemned the attack and offered condolences to the families of the victims.
Two weeks ago, fighters attacked the American University in Kabul, killing 13 people.
Like most government offices, the Defense Ministry is located in the heart of old Kabul, surrounded by a bustling market, which is frequented by thousands of pedestrians and vehicles daily.

Fierce fighting continues between the Afghan army and the militants across the country, notably in the southern province of Helmand and in the vicinity of the northern city of Kunduz.
