Deadpool Holds Top Spot In North America In Its 2nd Frame
Marvel’s R-rated antihero smash “Deadpool” continued to dominate movie theaters over the weekend, earning an estimated $55 million and trouncing a trio of newcomers.
That gives the film a $235 million domestic total, making it the fastest R-rated movie to surpass the $200 million mark (done in just ten days).
Last week’s box-office champ Deadpool pulverized the competition once again, snagging another $55 million in its second weekend, according to studio estimates from tracking firm comScore.
8 million. The film, in which Joseph Fiennes plays a Roman soldier investigating the death and resurrection of Jesus, was made for about $20 million by Sony’s Affirm label, which targets evangelical Christian moviegoers.
The Witch placed #4 with $8.7-Mfrom 2,046 theaters, the top opening for A24.
“The unusual choice to release the movie in many major worldwide markets before releasing it in the United States – a strategy that has also reduced piracy – built a “global countdown” buzz for Avengers”, Gomez and Nicieza wrote.
The historical drama “Race”, which centers on Olympic athlete Jesse Owens’ career, had a hard time finding an audience, coming in at sixth place with a gross of more than $7 million.
Overseas Deadpool is also cleaning up, where it has earned $256.5 million for a worldwide total of nearly $492 million.
Holding at No. 2 is the animated feature “Kung Fu Panda 3”, starring the vocal talents of Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman and Angelina Jolie. It added $3 million to its now domestic record total of $921 million.
Faith-based films tend to be very big, like “Noah” and “Exodus: Gods and Kings”, or very small, like “God’s Not Dead” or “War Room”. Horror flick The Witch has been getting a lot of critical praise, something unusual for the horror genre, but it didn’t translate into box office success. The film has become China’s biggest box office hit ever since opening earlier this month, earning $382 million in the country. It now has an 88 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so The Witch could have some legs in the weeks to come. “Race”, $7.3 million; 7. It also comes out ahead of How to Be Single and Zoolander 2, both of which enter their second weekend with more star power and marketing juice behind them but far lower box office takes, at $8 million (#5) and $5.4 million (#7), respectively. Focus, which recently underwent a major overhaul that saw its former CEO Peter Schlessel ousted in favour of Peter Kujawski, bought domestic rights to the film for US$5 million. The biblical epic, which cost about $20 million to make, met analyst expectations of $10 million to $15 million with $11.8 million in ticket sales.
