Deaf Seahawks FB Derrick Coleman arrested after hit-and-run, suspended by team
“On the evening of October 15, 2015, Seattle Seahawk Fullback Derrick Coleman, Jr. was involved in a two-car collision soon after leaving a team meeting”.
Coleman was positively identified by three witnesses as the aforementioned suspect, and Bellevue Police K-9 Ghost traced Coleman’s scent back to the scene of the crash. The other driver was hurt in the crash, possibly breaking a collarbone, according to a law-enforcement source.
Mylett said Coleman had an obligation, under Washington state law, to remain at the scene, and that his department will “continue to investigate and gather evidence”.
Coleman is the first legally deaf offensive player in the NFL. There was “no indication” that Coleman was intoxicated, per Sullivan, which is small consolation at this point for Seattle’s 12th man.
A field-sobriety test was performed, but the results of that were not released.
Coleman has been suspended indefinitely by the Seahawks, the team announced Thursday.
Bail has yet to be set and Coleman remains in King County Jail, Mylett said. Police charged Coleman with felony vehicular assault and felony hit-and-run.
Detectives found the Seahawks player two blocks away standing along SE 37th street, barefoot. He was placed on injured reserve after five games past year because of a broken bone in his foot. Coleman told police he did not use any alcohol or drugs before driving.
Coleman’s suspension means Will Tukuafu is likely to be Seattle’s fullback against Carolina.
When the Seattle Seahawks somehow blew a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the team was accused of metaphorically falling asleep at the wheel.
