The running back was denied his request to wear pink throughout the season in order to honor his mother who passed from breast cancer in May 2014.
Members of the Tualatin Valley Firefighters Union Local 1660 and Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue are teaming up during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to participate in the Firefighters in Pink Campaign. In addition to losing his mother previous year at the age of 53, he also lost four aunts to the disease.
According to ESPN, DeAngelo Williams of the Pittsburgh Steelers will pay for the mammograms of 53 women.
A few high school cheerleaders in Tampa, Florida, wanted to join the pink-wearing tradition but were told their pink uniforms were against school policy – after they had worn them the year before.
Williams went on to tell CBS that for him breast cancer isn’t just about October. Clinical breast exams should be performed every three years for woman in their 20’s and 30’s, while woman 40 years and old should be getting their exam every year.
“Men are typically diagnosed with larger tumors”, said Tuszka, “and with larger tumors you may have more involvement in the lymph nodes, and disease elsewhere”.
Williams is one of several players representing the NFL’s annual pink event, which encourages women to get their yearly screenings and asks for donations for the American Cancer Society.
Williams consistently sports pink hair and even starred in a commercial for the National Football League that pushed their branded awareness month.
