Debate Over ‘New York Values’
Here is the 1999 interview, brought to you by the Cruz campaign, in which Donald Trump elucidates what Ted Cruz now is referring to as “New York values”.
Some politicians demanded an apology after Cruz’s comments at the Republican debate.
Cruz reportedly suggested that Trump’s attacks came in response to a new poll that showed him losing in a head-to-head competition with the senator. He said, “Everyone understands that the values in New York City are socially liberal and pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage…”
“People are waking up, and just like millions of New Yorkers, they are fed up with policies that don’t fight for the working men and women of this country, but instead further the elite liberal views that have taken this country down a path that is not working”, Cruz said. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Saturday apparently did not go over well at a SC event.
“I find myself, for once, in agreement with Donald Trump”, said self-described liberal Democratic New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. But many scholars say that simply being born in America does not make you an American citizen; that is the argument used to legalize anchor babies. You’re from NY, so you might not.
On Friday, Trump went on offense at the crack of dawn at Java Joe’s, a Des Moines coffeehouse, where he told anchors of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that Cruz was “very strident”.
Rep. Dan Donovan, another New York Republican whose district includes Staten Island and Brooklyn, also hit Cruz by pointing to September 11 and Hurricane Sandy.
Cruz declined to comment on the Times report when asked by a CNN reporter during an appearance in Columbia, South Carolina on Friday.
So Cruz has to deal with it. He is saying, as he always has, that this issue has long been settled.
In addition to eligibility questions, Cruz has faced scrutiny over a New York Times report that he had failed to disclose in Federal Ethics Commission filings nearly $1 million in loans from Citibank and Goldman Sachs, where his wife works. And many people had no trouble calling out “New York” as meaning “un-American”. We want to hear from you. “I recognize what Donald says on the campaign trail today is fairly conservative, but voters are discerning”. Ted Cruz on Saturday, prominent conservative writer and radio host Mark Levin publicly scolded the GOP front-runner, a notable rebuke from a wing of the Republican Party that Trump needs in order to capture the Iowa caucuses.
