Defeated US candidate Clinton says: “Fight for our values”
The organisation’s founder Marian Wright Edelamn introduced Clinton to the audience as “the people’s president”, noting that she was leading the popular vote by over a million votes.
Trump would be the first Republican to win MI in a presidential election since George H.W. Bush won the state in 1988.
“In my lifetime, I have seen two elections where the victor of the general election did not win the popular vote”.
Will the Electoral College system be scrapped in favor of the popular vote? Al Gore won the popular vote.
Talk of abolishing the electoral college and establishing a “national popular vote” is not only ridiculous, but is unsafe to the integrity of our Republic.
“But as I said last week: our campaign was never about one person or even one election”, Clinton said.
Clinton, 69, was on the verge of tears as she told the crowd that she wished she could tell her late mother that her daughter would grow up to “win more than 62 million votes for president of the United States”.
There are also people out there who are encouraging electors to switch their votes from Trump to Clinton. The pact wouldn’t take effect until signed by enough states to make up a majority of the electoral college. It’s also worth noting that all Electors are chosen to represent their states, not every other state in the union. A constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress – now controlled by the GOP – and approval by three-fourths of state legislatures.
However, change is already underway at the state level, where 10 states and the District of Columbia have passed the National Popular Vote plan.
With Republicans now in control of both congressional houses, it’s unlikely Boxer’s bill will become much more than a political statement.
Like no other candidate in the 2016 election, Trump spoke to a growing demographic of Americans who viewed the inaction of Washington as responsible for the decline of America’s status in the world.
But on Tuesday, the president-elect changed his tune, tweeting that the system that got him elected is “actually genius”. Trump called the electoral system a “disaster for democracy”.
If this election outcome has proven anything, it’s that it is time to get rid of the Electoral College.
