Del Bosque to step down as Spain coach after Euro 2016
Outgoing Spain boss Vicente del Bosque has revealed that Iker Casillas was “upset” with the national team’s coaching staff during their Euro 2016 campaign.
The coach told Spanish Radio station Cadena Ser yesterday that the captain did not take kindly to being benched.
“It leaves a bad taste that he wasn’t good at all with the coaching staff, but with the rest of the players he was flawless”. Therefore with a penance, del Bosque said dismissing chapter in Spain. For that reason the only one I didn’t send a message [about my departure to] was Casillas. “He was ideal with the rest, his anger was with us”, he said.
The 65-year-old had already revealed ahead of Euro 2016 that he meant to leave his position after the tournament, but he refused to confirm as much after his side’s disappointing round-of-16 defeat at the hands of Italy, fuelling speculation he could stay on after all. He thinks we have done the wrong thing.
“I’ve known his parents for a long time, from when they used to bring him to training, and I feel proud that player has played so many games for the national team.” . I don’t believe three or four games will hurt his resume.
Casillas’ different treatment: “It’s upsetting that, with Toni [Grande], [Javier] Miñano and with me, he treated us differently to his team mates”.
“I don’t know whether they will call but [President] Villar already knows that I am fully at the Federation’s disposal”. Casillas moved to Porto a year ago.
The manager revealed his decision to leave his post on Thursday evening.
Del Bosque led his country to their first World Cup title in 2010 and followed that triumph by clinching Spain’s second successive European Championship two years’ later.
The goalkeeper has won the lot, for both Real Madrid and Spain.
However, their hopes of retaining the World Cup came to a painful end in Brazil two years later. The first stage went well. “It would be hard to win again”, Del Bosque said. “I will be available to help Spanish football in any way I can”. “If I can help in anything, I will”, he said.
While Vicente Del Bosque is yet put his resignation, it is being speculated that the Spanish federation might consider replacing him.
Spanish newspapers reported yesterday that former Sevilla, Deportivo La Coruna and Real Mallorca coach Joaquin Caparros is the front-runner for the hot seat.
